Ever dreamed of witnessing the adorably beautiful cherry blossoms? Guess what? You no longer need to fly to Japan or Korea to catch a glimpse of this iconic flower. The first ever sakura or cherry blossom park in the Philippines is set to open in Benguet! This is insanely exciting!!!
Based on a report from CNN Philippines in June just this year, over 30 cherry blossoms with other kinds of trees from Japan were planted in Atok, Benguet, by the officials of Atok, Benguet and officials from the Kochi prefecture and Japanese embassy to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ties between Japan’s Kochi prefecture and Benguet province.
In November 2015, more than a hundred cherry blossoms were cultivated but only a few survived because, according to Japanese botanist Kiyuharu Yamamoto, the trees were not planted in the right time. That is why this year, they planted it at the beginning of the rainy season.
The sakura trees are expected to bloom in three years. And the park that will be situated 2,000 meters above sea level will be opened to campers. Kewl!
Within three to five years, we won’t be needing to book a flight to Japan to catch the cherry blossom season! I know you are all excited. I feel you! But all we can do for now is patiently wait. *sighs*
Atok, Benguet is about two hours and 30 minutes away from Baguio City.
